McGraw’s relationship with his father is well documented. Up until the age of 11, McGraw always thought that his stepfather Horace Smith was actually his biological father. He discovered that was not the case when he stumbled upon his birth certificate in his mother’s closet.

Tug McGraw had a 19-year career in the big leagues. He pitched for the Phillies from 1975-1984, where he was an all-star and helped lead the team to the World Series title in 1980. That year he also finished in the top five of the National League Cy Young Award voting, which honors the game’s top pitcher.

In 2004, McGraw passed away from a brain tumor. His son’s single, “Live Like You Were Dying,” which was also released in 2004, is often associated with his father and his passing.
