“Tennessee Whiskey” has been around for decades and performed by artists such as David Allan Coe, George Jones and more recently Chris Stapleton. But there is one country icon who said he once passed on the song. His name – George Strait.

During a Facebook Live video with Kacey Musgraves, Strait admitted that “Tennessee Whiskey” was once presented to him back in the ’80s but he passed on it. As Strait said “I missed it.”

“The biggest one was probably ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ that Dean Dillon wrote” Strait said when asked if he had passed on a song that later found success. “I think it’s up for Song of the Year this year at the ACMs, right?”

Chris Stapleton’s version of “Tennessee Whiskey” is in fact up for Song of the Year at the 52nd ACM Awards. It is just one of the awards Stapleton is up for that night, along with Male Vocalist of the Year and Video of the Year for “Fire Away.”

The 52nd ACM Awards which will air live Sunday, April 2 only on CBS3.
