A Williamstown, New Jersey native, Dawson Coyle and his family have had “one heck of a year,” but now things are turning around for the aspiring young artist thanks to his journey on The Voice.

The past year has been a “real hard time” for Dawson Coyle. Last March he and his family lost pretty much everything in a devastating house fire. At the same time, Coyle was just getting his music career underway. Then in December, while he was in the process of competing on The Voice Coyle lost his grandfather, who he said was the number one fan of the show.

“It was good motivation and push for the show” Coyle told Frank and Andie of the XTU Morning Crew. “He was just so proud of the experience.”

After his friends and family kept encouraging him to give the show a shot, Coyle, who describes himself as non-competitive person, finally decided to travel to New York for an audition. At an open call with more than 40,000 hopefuls in attendance, Coyle was selected to travel to Los Angeles for a televised tryout in front of the show’s four star judges Alicia Keys, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani.

For his televised tryout, Coyle chose to perform the song “Happiness” by NEEDTOBREATHE. “I practiced the songs for weeks” Coyle said. “It was muscle memory for me.”

Midway through his performance, none of the superstar judges had decided to turn around for Coyle. It was at this point he began to give himself a pep talk about going home. With just seconds left in his performance, one of the judges chairs swung around and sitting in it was none other than country superstar Blake Shelton.

The “Came Here To Forget” artist praised Coyle for pouring everything into his performance. “I have only heard you sing one time, but dude I believe you” Shelton said.

The Voice has provided Coyle with things he could never have dreamed of, like working with Shelton and his country superstar buddy Luke Bryan. While he was not much of a country fan growing up, Coyle said “It was so much fun working with those guys.”

The Voice is currently in its 12th season. While Coyle could not spill the beans on how this season plays out, he said to keep on watching because you will never know what will happen next.
