A Charleston, South Carolina native and lifelong University of South Carolina fan, Darius Rucker was celebrating Sunday when the university’s men’s basketball team advanced to their first Final Four in program history.
Rucker was on hand Sunday (March 26) to watch his beloved team defeat the rival Florida Gators 77-70 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
As the final seconds ran off the clock and the reality that the team was about to advance to their first Final Four in program history began to set in, the “If I Told You” artist was spotted in the crowd shedding a tear as he was overcome with emotion.
Like many sports fans and their teams, the University of South Carolina’s athletic program hold a special place in Rucker’s heart. On Friday (March 24), Rucker was not able to be in attendance as South Carolina took on Baylor in the Sweet 16 of the tournament because of a previously scheduled show.
Just because he was preoccupied with a performance however, didn’t mean Rucker was going to miss South Carolina’s big 70-50 win. As he performed on stage, Rucker was able to keep an eye on the game thanks to a television with the game’s broadcast that was setup right in front of him.
South Carolina will take on Gonzaga for the right to advance to the National Championship game Saturday, April 1.
